Neuro Linguistic Programming ; ToastMasters Speech # 4

The objective of my speech is to introduce the field of Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP and explain one particular technique . In 1970s its founders were marketing NLP as a business tool, claiming that 'if any human being can do anything, so can you'. As you can see NLP has three terms - 1. Neuro 2. Linguistic or launguage 3. Programming.neurological processes ('neuro'), language ('linguistic') and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience ('programming') . NLP was coined to denote that these three terms can be organised to achieve specific goals in life.

NLP was originally promoted as an form of psychological therapy . Its founders found patters in the approach of successful psychologist and formed a common methodology for psychologists. Since then NLP practitioners have found many more techniques and have applied this concept to many scenarios. Today i will explain one particular NLP technique.

There are five input channels or senses we use in our communication.Of which People in general use three senses Predominantly - Sight , hearing and Touch.Personalities can be classified into 3 types - Visual,Auditory and Kinesthetic based on the predominant sense they use for communication . This Technique here is to identify a persons thinking system and ‘speak their language’, so that you to connect with him/her at a deeper level.

Let me explain each type personality type in detail

The first type is Visual
1.visual people will have a tendency to get our attention, because they are well dressed in bright colors; or their facial expressions and gestures will attract us.
2. they will use predicates which conveys visual image - For example Sentences such as "See what I mean ?",I can't imagine "
3. The principal values of the visual modality are dynamism and perfection. With dynamism we refer to the speed of visual intelligence. Perfectionism comes from having strong visual images, and experiences discomfort when in the presence of ugly or unfinished things.

the second type is Auditory
1. Auditory Personality types are more dominant in the auditory channel
2. The would use predicates such as Sound, hear. For example they would say sentences such as " Ok Got it Lound and CLear","You definitely sound very strong
3. The principal values held by those with auditory dominance are self belief and hard work inspite of adversity.

The third Type is Kinesthetic
1. A kinesthetic uses personal and more intimate words and words which convey feelings .
2. They wud use predicates such as "Feel","Hold",say sentences such as " I like how you finalised the deal " , " Lets keep in touch "
3. They would want to feel every time they hear something .

Knowing a person's favourite thinking system enables you to literally 'speak their language' which, in turn, enhances rapport with that person.

Let's say you and I are having a business meeting. Both of us speak good English but your native language is French. Now, although you can understand my English, if I begin speaking excellent French it will significantly change the dynamics of the conversation . You will find it easier to understand the subtleties and nuances of what I am saying and are also likely to unconsciously feel better disposed towards me.

In the same way if you are more at home with your kinaesthetic sense and I am more at ease with my visual sense we can still converse easily. However if I switch to discussing and describing in a more kinesthetic manner the dynamics of our interaction will improve.

There are many such NLP techniques. If there is a problem between you and your boss, there is a NLP solution to tackling it. There is a NLP approach to do well in a job interview and build rapport with the prospective employers. NLP practitioners have designed methodology even to pick a lady at a party. I encourage all to learn more NLP Techniques and apply the same in Day to Day Life.
